Turkish Folk Dance – Chiftetelli/Karshlima Suitelive_112 (Small)

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

From Istanbul, Turkey, these fun and lively folk dances are done by women at their own private parties, celebrations, and family gatherings. The term “Chiftetelli” means “Double Strings,” and refers, not to a particular rhythm, but to the style of dance. Originally a women’s dance, the “Chifetelli” is now also a popular dance for men. The term “Karshlima” means “Face to Face,” and also refers to a particular style of dance that is always done to a 9/8 rhythm. These types of dances are done in some form throughout the Turkish diaspora, and vary widely from region to region.
