Afghan Folk Dance – Attan
Although it originated in the Pashtun region of Afghanistan, Attan, which is the Pashtun word for “dance,” is now considered to be the national folk dance of Afghanistan. This dance is done by men, women, girls, and boys, usually in segregated situations. The dance has regional variations throughout Afghanistan. It is typically done in a circle, and the music and movements tend to speed up as the dance progresses. Music for Attan is usually played in a 7/8 time signature.
